David Lloyd Leisure

Description

David Lloyd Leisure has submitted a planning application (April 2025) to build a new health, fitness and wellness club at the former Bidston Dock, off Wallasey Bridge Road — at the heart of the Wirral Waters regeneration area.

Spanning a generous six-acre site within Peel Waters’ Bidston Dock holding, the proposed club reflects a major commitment to leisure-led placemaking as part of Wirral Waters’ evolution.

What’s Included

The planned facility will offer a comprehensive suite of health, fitness, sport and leisure amenities, including:

  • Three weather-protected tennis courts
  • Six canopy-covered padel courts — which would make it the largest padel facility on the Wirral
  • Indoor sports hall with two courts, plus a full-size gym and dedicated studio spaces for fitness classes
  • Heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools alongside a spa and spa garden — supporting wellness, relaxation and all-year swimming.
  • Children’s play area, making the club family friendly
  • Cafe lounge and social / business-hub style workspace, enabling a social and community-oriented environment for members.

Community & Connectivity

  • The new facility is expected to deliver around 100 permanent jobs once operational — with an additional ~60 jobs during construction.
  • Its location — off Wallasey Bridge Road, close to major transport links including the M53 motorway, Mersey Tunnel and Birkenhead North train station — will make it accessible across the Wirral and beyond.

A Milestone for Bidston & Wirral Waters’ Leisure-Led Strategy

The proposed David Lloyd Leisure club represents a major step forward in Wirral Waters’ ambition to deliver a mixed-use, high-quality waterfront destination — combining residential, commercial, leisure and community-focused assets.

It underscores the commitment to create not just new homes and workspace, but also vibrant, healthy, well-connected places where people live, work and enjoy life locally.

As the project advances through the planning process, the club is positioned to become a key amenity for Bidston Dock, complementing nearby residential and commercial developments.
