Birkenhead students get involved with Wirral Waters

13 and 14 year old students from Park High School in Birkenhead have been given the exclusive opportunity to get actively involved in the Wirral Waters planning process.

Lindsey Ashworth, Development Director from Peel, Jim Wilkie, Deputy Chief Executive from WMBC and Northwest Planning Aid contributed to an interactive workshop organised by Susie Wallis from the Merseyside Enterprise Learning Partnership.

Students were shown a presentation on Wirral Waters, which is the largest urban regeneration project in the UK. This included an animated ‘fly-through’ of the actual design which covers the disused docks in Birkenhead.

Lindsey Ashworth explained “Wirral Waters is a 30 year project, and will be completed by the time most of these students are in their 40’s. The scheme will bring about many positive changes not just to Birkenhead, but to the whole of Wirral and the Northwest, and it is my belief that young people should be encouraged to join in and in fact, we should be listening to them and what they want. After all, this is their future not ours! We sincerely hope that for the first time in history a selection of these students will be allowed to participate in the Planning Committee and to express their positive or negative views. Wirral is a pioneering place and would be the right place to start and show an example to others.”

Jim Wilkie also spoke about how important Wirral Waters is for the Birkenhead area in terms of generating jobs and creating houses. He encouraged students to think of this 30 year project as an active part of their future.

The Northwest Planning Aid invited the students to participate in an interactive session of Secret Millionaire. Taking inspiration from Wirral Waters students considered how they would spend £30,000 to regenerate a neglected local neighbourhood. The students then worked in groups to discuss the Wirral Waters project and produce a presentation of their own ideas and vision for the scheme.

Mr. Phil Cooper, Deputy Headteacher at Park High said “This has been a fabulous opportunity for our students to present their ideas for the regeneration of Birkenhead Waterfront. Students have welcomed Peel Holdings invite to contribute to the planning process and look forward to sharing their views.”

Susie Wallis also commented "What a fantastic group of students who engaged 100% with the brief they were given and came up with some very creative and innovative ideas for the Wirral Waters project, demonstrating just how enterprising they are".
