Connectivity
Special care has been taken to incorporate a 21st century national and regional transport network with safe, attractive, easily understood streets. This will encourage all forms of transport across Inner Wirral including rail, pedestrian and cycling, but also a correctly managed traffic plan around the dock areas and bridges.

Bus
Alternative forms of public transport to the car are important to consider in redevelopment proposals.
There are already good bus services in place, but when a traffic and transport assessment is undertaken for Wirral Waters, the result will inevitably show a predicted increase in demand and usage. It is expected that amendments and additions to routes will no doubt be sought if this is found to be the case.

Boat
Wirral forms one side of the River Mersey; the ocean gateway to the Northwest. Around the world, great waterfront redevelopments have emerged from existing ports such as New York, Vancouver and Shanghai. It is a mystery why the Mersey Estuary with all its natural qualities and assets has never improved itself and indeed stood still!
With the new cruise liner terminals planned for the Liverpool waterfront, huge passenger ships will be coming to the Northwest to dock. Wirral needs to offer these passengers something to tempt them across the river - Wirral Waters will be "the attraction."
Boats currently sail from Wirral Waters to Dublin and Belfast via the 12 Quays Terminal. For more information and departure times please visit

Train
Having one train station near to a redevelopment site is very useful, having four along the length of the site is almost unbelievable. The use of public transport is encouraged through government policies to give an alternative form of people movement to the car. Studies show that people are happy to use public transport if it is regular, reliable, safe, economic and well maintained. Regular use by passengers of a transport system is its only chance of continued success - public subsidy rarely works in the long term.
The scale and nature of Wirral Waters means that sustainability should never be an issue because the investment potential would be huge. We envisage owners of the rail network would consider increasing the regularity of the existing services, provide new destinations and hopefully some enhancement of the stations themselves.
